Short description
The Primero de Mayo Foundation was created in 1988 by the Spanish trade union Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) It started its work as a cultural foundation which had as main aim to recover the history of the trade unions in Spain, especially after the Spanish Civil War. Since then it keeps the archives of the history of the trade unions and also those of the Spanish emigration. Only in 1996 labour relations research has been structurally initialised at the foundation. It has around 20 people staff out of which 5 (to 7) researchers. The rest is administrative personnel and people dealing with the archives. The Primero de Mayo foundation has a Board of Managers that meets once a year to outline the foundations policies and that consists for 75% of trade union leaders and for 25% of university teachers. One of the most important aims of the Foundation is to create and strengthen the link between trade unions and the academic world. When doing research, an academic is always involved in order to provide another point of view. The CC.OO contributes financially to the foundation by covering its structural expenses (15-20% of the overall budget) and by financing specific projects. As for the rest of the budget, there are two main channels of financing - one is the yearly support by the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and the other one is the regular contribution of the Saving Bank. The Saving Bank does not set any lines of research for its financing whereas the Foundation has to negotiate with the Ministry every year the research topics for which it is going to use the money. Usually these are topics that are of particular interest to both parties - the Ministry and the Foundation One considerable advantage of working with the Ministry is that it gives the researchers of the Foundation access to data which would be otherwise very difficult or even impossible to acquire and, on the other hand, the Foundation offers a wide network of research based in the trade union activity.
