Invitation to a seminar on
The European social dimension – from Lisbon to EU 2020.
When: Monday 8 November, 14.00-16.30
Venue: The Brussels Office of the Swedish Trade Unions
Avenue de Tervueren 15, 1050 Brussels (Metro Merode)
Europe’s need for a new common strategy for economic growth and societal development is framed in the EU2020 strategy. There are many unfulfilled ambitions to attain after the ten years of Lisbon strategy, and new demanding challenges have risen. There are also many lessons to be learned from the past ten years which call for a reassessment of the priorities of the new strategy.
Social equality and justice must be in the forefront of the new EU2020 strategy. No move towards a knowledge-based economy, whether expanding or not, will by itself create full employment and welfare for all. Neither will it automatically imply an environmentally sustainable development which can combat the present threats to our climate. To achieve that, it must be supported by coherent policies using economic growth as a means to increased and sustainable welfare and not as a goal in itself.
This seminar will present the state of the art of the EU2020 strategy process, which is now being implemented in the shadow of the financial crisis, and its direction and priorities will be critically discussed from researchers’, trade unionists’ as well as politicians’ perspectives.
The seminar will be introduced by Philippe Pochet, Director of the European Trade Union Institute, and Lars Magnusson, Professor at the Dept. of economic history at Uppsala University, followed by Sam Hägglund, General Secretary of the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers. A political view will be given by the Danish MEP Emilie Turunen, the Green group.
The seminar is organized by The Brussels Office of the Swedish Trade Unions and SALTSA, a programme for promoting knowledge of European working life issues, Uppsala University
